New students are matched with other incoming students to form roommate pairs who live together in a double room their first year - a housing survey link arrives by email in mid-May, with room and roommate assignments sent by both email and mailed letter in early August. Families needing overnight accommodations in Walla Walla are encouraged to make reservations as soon as possible, given limited local lodging. Residence halls open for new students on Wednesday, August 26, the same day Opening Week begins. Don't ship items more than two weeks before the semester starts; packages can be picked up at the Reid Campus Center on move-in day.

Move-in day logistics
- Arrival window
- Wednesday, August 26. Your assigned check-in time is sent to your Whitman email as the date approaches, and Opening Week begins the same day.
- Check-in location
- You check in at your residence hall during your assigned time; watch your Whitman email for your hall's instructions. Packages shipped ahead can be picked up at the Reid Campus Center on move-in day.
- Parking
- Whitman strongly recommends that new students not bring vehicles, and campus parking is limited.
- What you'll receive
- Rooms include an extra-long twin bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, dresser, blinds, and a bulletin board, and laundry is free. Bring bedding, towels, hangers, a study lamp, a wastebasket, and laundry supplies. Halogen lamps, double-sided tape, air conditioners, and furniture are not allowed.
- Vehicle restrictions
- Whitman strongly recommends that new students not bring a vehicle. Alternatives include the Whitman Wheels electric car-share, a free bike-share, and shuttles to regional hubs.
Move-in day tips
- Arrive during your assigned move-in window - arriving early may mean waiting until your time slot.
- Bring a rolling cart or hand truck - campus carts can run out quickly during busy move-in periods.
- Have a parking backup plan - spaces near residence halls can fill up quickly, so know where you can unload if your preferred area is full.
