Dickinson State University's historic campus core - May, Stickney, and Klinefelter Halls, together known as "The Hill" - forms the Dickinson Normal School Historical District, the city's first local historic district, with first- and second-year students required to live on campus in halls including Selke Hall and Lowman Walton Hall.

Housing applications open March 1, with housing assignments released June 15. First-year and second-year full-time students are required to live in a residence hall and purchase a meal plan for the full academic year, with limited exemptions (married students, students with dependents, those living within 25 miles of Dickinson, or students 21+ by the start of classes). This specific date should be confirmed directly with the Office of Housing and Dining closer to move-in. Last year's move-in weekend ran Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, and Sunday noon to 2 p.m.

Move-in day logistics
- Arrival window
- Move-in is the Friday before classes, and last year it ran Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, and Sunday noon to 2 p.m. You move in during the check-in time the Office of Campus Life assigns you, so confirm your slot.
- Check-in location
- Check-in instructions arrive with your housing assignment. Campus Life staff must check you in; moving in without them isn't allowed.
- What you'll receive
- At check-in you get your building card access and room key, and you review and sign a Room Condition Report for your room. Rooms come with a bed (extra-long twin), desk, and dresser; only one refrigerator and one microwave are allowed per room, so coordinate with your roommate. Bring XL twin sheets, towels, hangers, and your own cleaning supplies. Candles, space heaters, toasters, coffee pots, and extension cords are not allowed.
Move-in day tips
- Arrive during your assigned move-in window - arriving early may mean waiting until your time slot.
- Bring a rolling cart or hand truck - campus carts can run out quickly during busy move-in periods.
- Have a parking backup plan - spaces near residence halls can fill up quickly, so know where you can unload if your preferred area is full.
- Watch the loading-zone time limit - many campuses require you to move your vehicle to longer-term parking after unloading.
